How Twitter has Changed How we Watch TV

Social media has had a dramatic impact on how we watch television, with Twitter leading the way for a social TV revolution. Social television – the term used to describe the symbiotic relationship between social media and TV – is producing big changes in how TV programs are created, delivered and consumed. Shows like American Idol and Pretty Little Liars, and special televised events like the Golden Globes and X Games, have embraced social media as a way to interact more intimately with their audiences, bringing content from the TV screen to the second screen (and in some cases from the second screen to the TV screen).
We watch more live TV now than we did five years ago. Advertisers use branded hashtags to market to viewers. Fictional characters have their own Twitter accounts. Actors tweet from behind the scenes as they’re filming new episodes. Innovating Philanthropy: Panera’s Social Experiment

Panera Bread visionary Ron Shaich has spent his career trying to change the way America eats by focusing on choice and an affordable, high quality experience. Since its founding, Panera has grown to over 1,600 bakery-cafes around the country, including its new, innovative Panera Cares Community Cafes – non-profit cafes to address food insecurity.
Ron’s vision was to launch a “pay-what-you-can” cafe and see whether the community would support it. If the experiment succeeded, the Panera Bread Foundation would have a platform to leverage all of Panera’s expertise and resources to fight food insecurity at scale.
Ron will share his passion for expanding the Panera Cares Community Cafe concept to make a difference in the world and discuss how Panera is engaging offline communities, as well as social media and word-of-mouth, to fight food insecurity and ignite a social movement. More than 12,000 people shared their stories through digital channels, sparking national conversation that continues to touch lives and open eyes.When cause program Ford Warriors in Pink wanted to connect on an emotional level to fight breast cancer and grow its digital platform 365 days a year, it turned to filmmakers at Flow Nonfiction to tell stories of real people.
