PreCommerce Summit: A Fire Side Chat With John Battelle

John Battelle helped wrap up the PreCommerce Summit being interviewed by Bob Pearson and Aaron Strout. John covered a lot of ground, talking about the early days of Wired Magazine, banner ads, the state of the Internet, what it takes to be a successful startup and more.

Here was John’s advice to entrepreneurs:

  1. Do not be lazy when raising money. Don’t just take the money. Take the right money.
  2. He said there are two kinds of entrepreneurs, Missionaries (those who are driven by passion to innovate or disrupt) and Mercenaries (those who focus on business plans, plus making their ideas and their companies successful). Mercenaries make more money, but you really need both types to make a company successful.

  • Among the best interviews he’s done? Will.i.am; among the not-so-best? Yuri Milner. Since then, Yuri sends John a bottle of bourbon every year.
